What Is Photonics?

Photonics is an area of study that involves the use of radiant energy (such as light), whose fundamental element is the photon. Photonic applications use the photon in the same way that electronic applications use the electron.

The term photonics is used for any science or technology that uses light, combining optics, electro-optics, and optoelectronics. It is both its own
industry and an enabling technology which extends across and impacts all industrial sectors, from healthcare to security, from manufacturing to telecommunications, from energy to the environment and from aerospace to biotechnology.

Photonex is the exhibition for photonics in the UK, it is an annual event and has been running for 18 years.
